Many of the benthic species occurring in potamal reaches exhibit no special adaptations for running waters and Page 13 may also inhabit suitable standing water bodies. Most of the major rivers in Colorado have potamal characteristics in their lower reaches. The River Continuum Concept (Vannote et al. 1980) hypothesizes that aquatic invertebrates are predictably structured along resource gradients over the longitudinal stream profile. This concept emphasizes downstream shifts in the relative importance of functional feeding groups as the composition of food resources changes along the river continuum.

For example, living aquatic angiosperms tend not to be eaten and their relative abundance in lotic habitats will not be reflected in gut analyses. Food habits of stream insects tend to be based more on feeding mechanisms (functional feeding groups) than selection of specific food types (Cummins 1973). Table 4 shows the categories of food resources available in lotic ecosystems and the macroinvertebrate functional feeding groups utilizing each resource. See Merritt and Cummins (1984) for a tabular summary of the known feeding mechanism of North American genera of aquatic insects.
