He becomes little more than a beast through such work. The simple pieties of Ruth gradually lose their hold upon him before the actual nature of hard physical labour. The gap between his experiences and Ruth's values widens in other ways. The desire to be a writer had come out of his basic love of reality. He had hoped to write about the things he knew, a rough and low world of adventure and hard work. His sister Gertrude, however, after listening to several of Martin's stories, points out that on the whole she preferred happy endings.

There is an alternative in the book, introduced by Brissenden: socialism, at least in notional form, is the body of values which Martin Eden rejects at once and out of hand. He takes years to see through capitalism, but the 'slave-morality' of socialism requires no such careful examination before being rejected. The reason why is not hard to divine. There are no socialist conversion stories with happy endings in London's work. He was frankly too pessimistic about the prospects of the movement after 1905 to write otherwise.
